Mark Thatcher is the son of former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher and Sir Denis Thatcher. He is a businessman who has been involved in a number of controversies.
Early in his life, he attracted media attention, especially following his participation in the 1982 Paris-Dakar Rally, where he and his co-driver went missing for six days.
Perhaps his most significant controversy involved his alleged role in the Al-Yamamah arms deal between the UK and Saudi Arabia. It was claimed he facilitated the deal and profited from it, although he has consistently denied these allegations.
He later moved to South Africa, where he was arrested in 2004 and pleaded guilty to unwittingly helping finance a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea. He received a suspended sentence and a fine.
Thatcher has generally maintained a low public profile in recent years.
